Club Information

The Royal New Zealand Navy Alpine and Ski Club is a private club set up for the benefit of past and present members of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve (RNZNR) and the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR).  The principal objective of the club is to encourage amateur skiing, mountaineering, tramping and other alpine sports within the RNZN.

The Club Lodge is located at 44 Thames Street, Ohakune (see map). Ohakune is situated at the bottom of Turoa Ski Field (part of Mount Ruapehu in the centre of the North Island), approximately four hours by road from Auckland.  The lodge is across the road from the Railway Station.  The Ohakune area is on the edge of the Tongariro National Park and offers skiing, mountaineering, tramping, family walks, guided tours, trout fishing, white water rafting, canoeing, camping, golf, etc, making it a great summer or winter destination.
The lodge consists of two buildings.  These have drying rooms and heating in the recreational spaces.  The front lodge also has a laundry and ski waxing / repair facility.  The front lodge can sleep a maximum of 43 people (eight rooms each with four beds - one a double - and one room with three beds).  The rear lodge (Glyde Lodge) sleeps 20 people.  There may be a custodian in residence in the Glyde Lodge. Blankets and pillows are provided.  Sheets and pillow cases, towels and food are to be taken.  Kitchens are fully equipped. Click here for photos of the lodge facilities.

Ohakune village has a supermarket, ski hire, restaurants, bar / night clubs etc.  Commercial transport to the ski area is available from outside the Powderhorn Chateau.  Ski rental is available at the top of the mountain or at several local hire shops.

Membership is open to current members of the RNZN, RNZNR and RNZNVR and former members of the RNZN who held membership for at least one year prior to release, providing their membership is continuous. Partners and children of members may be included as part of a family membership. Serving members of other navies or defence forces during such time as they are loaned, attached or seconded to the Royal New Zealand Navy are also eligible for membership.

More detail about membership rules can be found in the club constitution.
